¿Cuándo cambiar tu kimono de BJJ?

When to change your BJJ kimono?

If you practice BJJ, the kimono is essential, the correct word is that it is obligatory, because without the kimono we would be talking about Grappling. And therefore, we use it several times a week, and several times a month.

The important question that we all ask ourselves at some point is: how do you know when it's the right time to renew your kimono? Here we tell you everything, so you can decide what condition your Kimono is currently in.

There are 3 signs that you need a new kimono:

1. Visible wear:

Visible wear and tear is wear and tear that, at first glance, such as tears, frayed stitching, or loose patches, means you know it's time to consider a replacement. These imperfections not only affect appearance, but can also limit your mobility and pose a risk of injury.

2. Loss of fit:

Over time and with repeated washing, kimonos can shrink or lose their original shape. If you notice that your kimono no longer fits properly, it could be affecting your comfort and performance.

3. Persistent bad smell:

Even with frequent washing, sweat and bacteria can permeate the fibers of the kimono, making it difficult to eliminate odors. A clean kimono is essential for personal hygiene and coexistence with your training partners.

If one of these 3 signs is already present on your kimono, do not hesitate to change it, you can take a look NOW at our Tenace kimonos (with customizable option)

Is kimono hygiene important for our health?

A clean kimono not only protects your health, but also the health of those who share the mat with you. Bacteria and fungi such as Staphylococcus or ringworm can easily spread in close contact environments such as BJJ.

Tips to keep your kimono hygienic:

  • Wash your kimono after every workout. This prevents the buildup of sweat and bacteria.
  • Dry thoroughly. Never store your kimono damp, as this encourages mold growth.
  • Use mild detergents. Avoid products that may wear out fibers or cause skin irritation.
  • Do not use it outside the tatami. Keep your kimono exclusively for training, avoiding contact with dirty surfaces.

Wash your Kimono correctly with these steps:

  1. Wash your kimono in cold or warm water (maximum 30°C) to prevent shrinkage.
  2. Use a gentle wash cycle to protect the seams and fabric.
  3. Avoid using fabric softeners, as they can weaken the fibers.
  4. Air dry your kimono and avoid the dryer, which can cause shrinkage.
  5. Regularly inspect the seams and repair small tears to prolong their life.

Difference between Jiu-Jitsu with gi and grappling (no-gi)

BJJ with gi and grappling no-gi are forms of the same sport, but they have key differences:

  • With gi (kimono): In this modality, the kimono is part of the strategy, since it is used to perform grabs, submissions and control of the opponent.
  • No-gi: In grappling, lighter clothing such as rashguards and shorts are used. Here, speed and direct body holds are key.

Both disciplines require specific equipment. If you train both, it is crucial to have a well-maintained gi and technical clothing such as rashguards for no-gi.
