Types of Contact Sports and Ear Protectors

Each combat sport has its own specific characteristics and risks when it comes to ear injuries. Here are some popular combat sports and their relationship to ear protectors:

Jiu Jitsu:
  • In jiu-jitsu, ear protectors are useful to prevent ear deformation, known as "cauliflower ear." Jiu-jitsu fighters can suffer ear injuries due to close and often aggressive contact with their opponents on the ground. Ear muffs help prevent ear cartilage from being damaged and deformed due to friction and squeezing.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA):

  • In MMA, fighters face a wide variety of techniques, including striking, kicking, submissions and ground fighting. Due to the diversity of attacks, helmets or earmuffs may be beneficial to protect the ears from direct hits, falls, or submissions involving the head.

Grappling:

  • Grappling includes disciplines such as wrestling, judo and wrestling. In these disciplines, close contact and constant rubbing can cause ear injuries. Earmuffs are essential to avoid deformation of the ears and prevent bruises and cuts.

Wrestling:

  • In wrestling, where wrestlers fight in a ring, physical contact is frequent. Earmuffs, known as "wrestling earmuffs," are essential for protecting the ears from abrasions and injuries that can occur due to contact with the mat or constant friction with opponents.

Sambo:

  • Sambo is a combat sport that combines elements of wrestling and judo. Since close contact and falls are common in sambo, ear protectors are used to prevent ear injuries, including cartilage deformation.

In all of these combat sports, the relationship with ear protectors is the protection of the ears from injuries such as cartilage deformation, bruises, cuts and abrasions, which can occur due to physical contact and the specific techniques of each discipline. These devices are crucial in preventing ear deformation, which can be an aesthetic and functional problem for athletes.
