¿Quieres competir en Jiu-Jitsu?

Do you want to compete in Jiu-Jitsu?

Are you planning to compete in Jiu-jitsu soon? There is one essential thing you should know before signing up for any tournament: the rules regarding jiu jitsu kimonos. Not all kimonos are suitable for competitions, and each organization has specific regulations that can determine whether your equipment is approved or not.

It is very important to wear the right jiujitsu clothing. In this blog, we will explain the rules of the kimono in IBJJF competitions, how to prepare and what to avoid so that you are not disqualified before entering the tatami, in short, everything you need to know to go to the competition and be able to compete.

Characteristics of a kimono to compete in IBJJF

Here's the first mistake many make: assuming that all competitions have the same rules. This isn't the case. Each organization has its own regulations, and if you don't know them, you could be in for a nasty surprise on tournament day.

The most well-known competitions in BJJ are:

  • IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation): This is the largest and most strict in terms of rules. If you compete here, you need a white, blue or black kimono that meets specific measurements.
  • ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club): Mainly focused on No-Gi, but if you compete in the kimono category at certain events, the rules may vary.
  • Local cups and tournaments: These often have their own rules, and some allow more freedom in kimono colors or designs.

Before competing, do your research on the rules of the organization you are going to participate in. Avoid last-minute surprises!

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) is the largest and most recognized organization in the world of BJJ. Their rules regarding BJJ gis are strict, and if your gi does not meet their standards, you could be disqualified before your first match.

The main IBJJF rules for kimonos are:

Material and thickness: It should be made of cotton or similar material, be resistant and not allow the opponent to grab it easily.

Allowed colors: You can only use white, blue or black. Any other color is prohibited.

Kimono size:

  • Sleeves should be long enough so that when you extend your arm, they are 4 cm from the wrist.
  • The pants must reach 4 cm above the ankle.
  • The space between the sleeve and the arm must not exceed 7 cm when the referee tests with his measuring tape.

Patches and logos: Patches are allowed, but only in specific areas of the kimono. If they are in prohibited places, the referee may ask you to remove them before the fight.

Appropriate belt: It should be the color of your graduation and be well adjusted.

Prepare your kimono to compete in BJJ

A common mistake among competitors is to arrive at the tournament with a kimono that is not in optimal condition. When training in the same kimono for a long time it becomes worn out, we recommend that you buy a new one in advance so that you can get used to it before the tournament. Here are some essential tips to ensure that your kimono is suitable for competitions:

Check the size: Before the competition, try on the kimono and do some movements. If it is too tight or if the sleeves and pants are too short, you could be disqualified.

Wash and dry thoroughly: A dirty or smelly kimono could get you disqualified. Also, make sure it is completely dry to avoid any issues with moisture.

Bring an extra kimono: If your kimono fails inspection, having a spare kimono can save you from being knocked out of the competition.

Check your patches: If you have patches in prohibited areas, cut them out or change your kimono.

Don't wear a worn out kimono: If your kimono is too worn out, with tears or thin areas, the referee may not allow you to fight in it.

Kimono for training or for competing?

Many fighters use a different bjj kimono for training and another exclusively for competing. This can be for several reasons:

Training kimonos may be heavier and more resistant. If you use them constantly for training, they will wear out faster, and therefore, they could not be used for competition. In training, you can use that kimono that you like so much, with more patches and designs without restrictions.

Competition kimonos may be lighter in weight to facilitate speed and mobility. These must comply with IBJJF rules and other tournaments. These kimonos are not used as much, so they last longer in good condition.

If you are serious about competitions, it is advisable to have at least one tournament-exclusive kimono. At Tenace , we offer men's and women's competition kimonos with a perfect balance between weight, strength and comfort.

Colors of your kimono to compete

In tournaments such as the IBJJF, only white, blue or black kimonos are allowed. However, other organizations may be more flexible and allow colors such as grey, green, red or even custom designs.

Before participating in local tournaments or in different organizations, check the specific rules before signing up. In No-Gi or Submission Grappling events, a kimono is not required, but rashguards and shorts do have color restrictions depending on the athlete's graduation level.

Carry your kimono correctly until you reach the competition

When traveling to a competition, it is important that your kimono is neatly folded to keep it space-saving and clean. Follow these steps:

1️⃣ Shake it well before folding to remove dust or hair.
2️⃣ Fold the pants and place them inside the jacket to save space.
3️⃣ Fold it into a rectangle and fasten it with the belt.
4️⃣ Use a breathable bag to transport it and prevent it from absorbing moisture.

Carrying an extra kimono and accessories such as a spare belt, rashguards and finger tape is also key to being well prepared.
